Anyone who has spent time exploring a graveyard will have had a glimpse of the enormous wealth of social and family history hidden among the gravestones and the long grass – as well as snippets of poetry and snatches of beautiful sculpture and engravings.
Now there’s the chance for community groups, history societies and church groups to find out more about how to recognise and document the historic treasures hidden in graveyards, including who is buried there and how to record and communicate this.
This month (October) there’s a choice of free one-day training courses in Chepstow, Monmouth and Abergavenny being held by Glamorgan-Gwent Archaeological Trust, in association with adventa, part of Monmouthshire’s rural development programme.
Exact venues are yet to be confirmed, but the courses will be held during the last two weeks of October and early November. Anyone interested in attending is invited to contact Joanna Goodwin by October 19, indicating their interest and preferred location. Email: Joanna@adventa.org.uk or phone 01633 748311.
