David Pritchard sung the praises of the Care and Repair agency who came to his aid following a recent operation. Mr Pritchard, aged 70, was hospitalised after having his leg amputated and unable to return home until it was possible for him to be mobile.
Care and Repair Monmouthshire fitted a stair lift and ramps in the house Mr Pritchard shares with his wife, making it possible for him to be discharged from hospital and return home.
Mr Pritchard said: “I wouldn’t have been able to live independently without Care and Repair’s help – they had the stair lift fitted within two days. Since it was fitted I can get around by myself, even if my wife goes to town.”
The BBC film crew visited Mr Pritchard as a case study for public spending in Wales. It was screened on both BBC1 and S4C.
Care and Repair agency manager Shona Martin explained: “Statistics show that a night in hospital can cost between £300 - £700, so the cost of fitting a stair lift, ramps and smoke detectors is a drop in the ocean. It also means that clients like Mr Pritchard are able to continue living independently.”
Care and Repair is a service part-funded by Monmouthshire County Council. They provide free home improvement and advice to older and disabled people to help maintain independence and remain in their own homes in greater comfort, warmth and security.
