At Chepstow Chamber of Commerce meeting on Thursday 3rd March Better Trains 4 Chepstow (Bt4C) explained the five years of lobbying that they had been doing which had resulting in Cross Country Trains agreeing to stop an additional 14 trains per day at Chepstow.
Jim Jenkins of Bt4C explained to members that this is only a trial and asked for the support of Chepstow Chamber of Commerce and Chepstow Marketing to ensure that they can publicise this far and wide, this will be done by providing a banner to be displayed in Chepstow High Street promoting the extra trains and designing and printing leaflets which will be circulated from the West Midlands to West Wales to promote travel to Chepstow and the surrounding area by Train.
Melanie Phillips, President of Chepstow Chamber of Commerce said “We are determined to be successful in getting more local people to use the train service however we currently have very limited car parking at Chepstow Station. The Station car park is already full by 8am every morning and if we want to make this service sustainable we need to be seen to provide more parking for commuters. We understand that the Mabey Bridge site may be redeveloped at some stage and that additional car parking for Chepstow station could be provided at that time.
However, we cannot wait that long. We need to act now!
There is an area directly behind Chepstow Station which we believe are disused sidings. It has access from the road leading to Mabey Bridge and would make an ideal temporary car park for at least twenty vehicles. At the moment the area is overgrown but could be easily cleared and made level.
We are contacting Monmouthshire County Council to request as a matter of urgency that to work together with the Chamber to ensure the success of this trial - we might never get another opportunity.”
