Monmouthshire County Council is to expand its childcare provision during 2011/12 thanks to a £70,000 Welsh Government grant. Priorities have been identified by the council’s Early Years Development and Childcare Partnership and plans are now in place to develop childcare settings, provide start up grants for new out of school clubs, extend existing provision and fund one-to-one support workers to enable children with additional needs to take part in out of school clubs.
The biggest hurdle to registering new play provision has always been recruiting suitably qualified staff but a welcome opportunity has arisen for existing staff to acquire childcare and play qualifications while at work. Training, completely free of charge, is carried out by Schools Assist, a division of Associated Community Training, a leading provider of skills training in Wales.
