On Saturday 30th July 2011 The annual Chepstow 10-a-side rugby tournament kicked off in what was to be a family fun filled day where the hosts Chepstow RFC showed their dominance and the progression made over the pre season by winning the cup final. It was a chance for their new signings to be shown off and they certainly didn’t disappoint as the hard running prop Adam Ledner lead from the front backed up by new back row signing of Chris Mill’s big tackling. These two players are certainly going to turn a few heads in Division 4 this season and help Chepstow push for that promotion spot. The first game kicked off at midday and was a game between Chepstow and the Staffordshire Penguins who again won the prise for the best kit. From the off the strong Chepstow side showed their intentions for the day and had a convincing win winning the game 5 tries to 1. While the rugby was entertaining the facilities ran by volunteers, which included many stores, bouncy castle, children’s disco and even go-carts was gathering much support and the barbeque was popular throughout the day. In their second game Chepstow played local team Boughspring Barbarians who were put together by local lad Howard Wilcox and were made up of footballers and ex rugby players, who were raising funds for Maria Cure Cancer. This team showed a lot of potential and had a number of class players who are now hoping to sigh for Chepstow and make their squad even stronger, with another fine performance Chepstow won this game and made the semi-finals of the cup, for the Barbarians it was the plate final. In the first cup semi final Chepstow were to play Watkins Allstars a team made up for local players and a number of Lydney players. This was one of the games of the competition and Chepstow yet again played to their strengths and in a hard fought game Chepstow came away with the spoils and booked a place in the cup final. The other cup semi final was between the Staffordshire Penguins and Tonyrefail from national division 3, Tonyrefail won this game to set up a cup final with the hosts Chepstow. Before the main final there was the matter of the Plate final where the Barbarians were to meet Newport High School Old Boys of division 3, this was won by the old boys.
The final kicked off between Chepstow and Tonyrefail and the hosts showed their intent by scoring the first 4 tries of the game with only Tonrefail touching the ball to kick off. Although Tonyrefail are a division higher than Chepstow, Chepstow showed that they are easily good enough to play at a higher level and are one of the favourites to gain promotion in the coming campaign. Chepstow turned around with a four try cushion and it was a big ask for Tonyrefail to gain anything from the game, however they did start the second half better and quickly scored two tries, Chepstow answer to this was to score two of their own and for the first time won the cup. Thanks must go out to all the teams that turned up and played in sure a memorable event. And a special thanks to all who help set up and keep the day running smoothly. This was a family weekend enjoyed by all who attend and shows that the movement of Chepstow RFC is in full flight.
